I just read a great article about link building and web site promotion. Some people start to build links, and promote site when web site or blog is fresh and new, and after some time they slow down or even they don't work on link building. This is big mistake, because if you want to be a king in your niche and take a big peace of cake, and yes i am talking about money cake, you need to promote your site all the time. Some other new and fresh blogs in your niche working hard, build their backlinks, writing fresh and interesting content, and if you slow down they will take your position, and they will take your money.

You want to search engines rank your pages very high in the search results. When we say search engines we have Google in our mind. Why? Because Google could give to you a lot of traffic and when you are fine ranked on Google you don't need to think about other search engines. Actions that we perform to have a good page rankings are called SEO (Search engine optimization).

To make your pages well optimized for SERPs , you need to do a lot of hard work, and actions to achieve that. One of very important things for page rankings is link building.

Backlinks are incoming links to your web site pages. Backlinks have it's own "weight". Some links have quality and they will hep you to rank better in SERP's. On the other hand some links can hurt your reputation, and make you banned from search engines, so you need to be smart and build links very carefully. The secret is not just in number of backlinks, it is in there quality.

• Link from pages with bigger Google PR will give to you more credits. If you think you can buy a hundred links with higher PR and rank your pages very high, you are forget that we talking about Google, they are very smart fellows. You need to have link with low PR pages as well. If you have only with high PG, it's so obviously that you just buy them and Google don't like buyers they like when you build your links on natural way. Only 20% of your all backlinks can be with PR 5 or higher.
• Your anchor text in backlinks must varied. If you have thousands of links with same anchor text Google will not respect them.
  
• Very important is that your backlinks come from pages with related content. You don't need links from sites that are not in your niche.
• You need links to your internal pages also. Mixing anchor text for internal pages is smart link building. Google will thinking on this way - If you have just links to your home page, and not on your internal pages with content then your content is not valuable. But if other sites linking your content then there must be something precious.
• You need backlinks with different IP address.
  
• Links from EDU domains are precious.
• Mix up links from trusted old pages, and links with fresh pages.
• Reciprocal links don't have a big value, but they can hurt your ranking.
• Three way linking is not a legitimate technique, you can be banned if you using this one.
• Links from directories and link farms, are not valuable. Google trust just some of them like Yahoo, or Dmoz Directory. You can submit your site in free directories but I suggest this as extra link building work.
• Don't build links in dirty neighborhood. Links from adult pharmacy, and poker/casino sites can just hurt your link building strategy.
• If you have new site, the biggest mistake in link building can be to create a hundreds or thousands of links in day one. Also if you get about 20 links for one week, don't build a 300 suddenly one day. Just build links in natural and dont't rush.
• Age of backlinks is important too. The longer you have them value is bigger.
  
• Google is against buying links. So if you want to buy a link don't do it in public on some forum and be careful.

If you build links with this golden rules, you will avoid to be banned from search engines. And also you will increase your traffic and SERP ranking. If you want to get revenue from your web site link building is one of the first steps you need to made.
